VANCOUVER, BC (PGA of BC) - PGA of BC Club Professionals gathered at Point Grey Golf & Country Club Monday and Tuesday to compete for the Dick Munn Memorial Trophy, named after the longtime Point Grey Head Professional and BC golf legend. Battling the club’s windy conditions and challenging greens during the Srixon/Cleveland Golf Club Professional Championship presented by Nike Golf, host professional Dave Zibrik held on to win his second career CPC title. His win lifted five years’ worth of weight from his shoulders, ending his streak of consecutive runner-up finishes in the tournament.
Zibrik emerged as leader after round one Monday, entering play today with a one-shot advantage over Jamie Moran (Crown Isle Resort & Golf Community). A bogey on the par-4 fourth spelled some trouble, with Moran, Eric Wang (Victoria Academy of Golf) and Nathan Leonhardt (Tour Development Academy) nipping at Zibrik’s heels. Despite a double bogey on the 16th, he was able to hold on and outlast his opponents by adding four birdies. With a crowd forming around the 18th green to cheer on Zibrik, who serves as Director of Golf at Point Grey, he fired a rocket of a five-iron to the back of the green. Two calm and composed putts for a birdie later, he walked off to a gallery of applause as the 2023 Club Professional Champion.
“Winning the trophy named after our longtime golf professional Dick Munn, seeing a few members out there supporting me, it means a lot. We have such an incredible facility here, a golf course with a lot of history. To win this event here, it’s really special,” said Zibrik.
“It was fairly steady on the front, some good par saves early. Made some five- and six-footers to stay in it. I got it rolling a bit with birdies on the back nine. The only tough one was sixteen, I made double there but was able to make some great shots on seventeen and eighteen. I couldn’t be happier with my round.”
Finishing tied for second place, Moran and Wang both put forth impressive performances. Wang was aggressive and hungry for the win in round two, piling up five birdies Tuesday. Moran played unflappably steady and consistent throughout the tournament, avoiding mistakes and keeping the pressure on Zibrik.
In fourth place, Leonhardt amassed five birdies today to go along with two eagles Monday and close the tournament at 2-over. Brad Clapp (Ledgeview Golf Club) revved the engine en route to six birdies for the day to finish in fifth place.
The 2023 Srixon/Cleveland Golf Club Professional Championship had a record draw with 59 competitors, with Zibrik and the Point Grey team jumping with no hesitation at the opportunity to expand the field.
The PGA of BC is proud to award a purse of $20,000 to the top-29 and ties in the Club Professional Championship. As champion, Zibrik won $3,500, while Wang and Moran were each awarded $2,250.
The CPC saw two winners of the closest-to-the-pin competition. Gordon Mink (Hi-Knoll Golf Centre) and Zibrik were our Maui Jim KP winners. Thank you to Maui Jim for the support!
