Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada (Kwikwetlem First Nation) - HSR Zero Waste, which provides consulting and commercial services for facilities to create waste, re-use, and zero waste policies, celebrates two years of developing and administering zero waste-related courses offered by non-profit organization Zero Waste Canada. Over 100 individuals both nationally and internationally in academia, policy, urban planning, media, and other industries at companies such as BIO RAW, the Province of British Columbia, and the University of Calgary have taken the courses.
“The response from those who have gone through our courses has been overwhelmingly positive,” says Jamie Kaminski, President of HSR Zero Waste and Board Member at Zero Waste Canada.
The Intro to Zero Waste course promotes and introduces zero waste best practices to the general public and answers questions like what zero waste is, why it’s important, why to go zero waste now, and how to make changes. The Zero Waste Fundamentals Program, which launched in 2020, was designed for those looking for more information on how to take zero waste to the next level. Individuals gain a foundation of zero waste practices, policies, values, and concepts. The Zero Waste Associate Program launched in November 2021 provides individuals with an in-depth understanding of peer-reviewed and internationally accepted zero waste practices and policies and reviews how to incorporate zero waste policies and practices at the facility level.
“We fully automated these courses to focus on supporting those who have learned the basics and now want to move along their zero waste journey,” Kaminski continues. “The Zero Waste Associate program allows individuals to go deeper into the individual policies and history of zero waste to support communities and organizations along their own Zero Waste journey. We created these courses always reflecting on the value people are getting out of it, and I think we did a fabulous job packaging an incredible amount of value in an affordable and accessible way.”
Since offering zero waste courses through Zero Waste Canada, HSR Zero Waste has also developed the new Zero Waste Construction Certification with Light House Sustainability Society, and is facilitating the Waste Auditor Training Course in BC and Alberta on behalf of Circular Innovation Council.
